EQ: How did the Mesopotamian Civilization develop?
Civilizations were developed like early farming. Civilizations are complex societies that have cities, governments, art, religion, class divisions, and a system for writing.
In the river valleys the first civilization arose because the farming conditions made feeding large groups of people easy. Another thing the river made easier was to trade and travel. Trade was a good way to gets goods from place to place. Cities grew into valleys and became the centers of civilizations.
The need of organization took place as the cities took shape. Someone had to plan and decide about matters of common concern .The government was formed by people to do just that. Leaders handled food supplies and building projects. Laws were made so they could keep order and make armies to fight off enemies.
With less worries about meeting the basic needs, the people in river valleys had time to think more about different things. Religion and art were developed. For information to pass they invented writing. Also they created calendars so they could tell time. The early civilizations had class structure that was a shared feature. In society people held different places depending on there work there riches and the amount of power they had.
Southern Iraq was where the earliest civilization arose. It was on a flat plain that the Tigris and Euphrates rivers bounded. The area was then called Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia means "the land between the rivers" in Greek. In the eastern part of the fertile crescent lied Mesopotamia. The fertile crescent was a curving strip of land. It extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian gulf.
